A beginner’s guide to engaging in sex therapy with a couple who are struggling to talk about their needs in therapy. Common issues identified in couples therapy will be reviewed and techniques, lenses, or languages to address each will be identified. This course will involve an analysis of gender roles and the intersection with relational skillsets and sex; and will discuss how to bridge the gap and address the relationship between couples therapy and individual therapy.

Course objectives:

  • Identify the most common issues facing couples seeking therapy
  • Develop techniques and resources that guide couples toward more effective communication and collaborative decision-making 
  • Identify some of the current modalities of couples therapy, including the developmental model, EFT, and system theories   
  • Learn how individual therapists can support the relational goals of the couples while doing individual work 
  • Discuss case examples where one partner is coming out with a new gender/sexual identity

This course will be offered virtually via Zoom, will require pre-registration, and will be recorded for quality assurance and evaluation purposes only.

To receive Continuing Education credits an evaluation must be completed and submitted at the end of the course.

This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and is approved for 3 CE Credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification.
