Exploration of different philosophies and religious beliefs that may influence a person’s relationship to their body, sensuality, sexuality, and the freedom to explore one’s desires and needs. Lenses and structures that can aid people in facing themes of shame, guilt, fear, and worry about their sexuality and their spiritual health will be explored to help challenge and provide alternatives to religiously motivated suppression/avoidance techniques.
Course objectives:
- Learn different religious viewpoints about sexuality from spaces in and outside of the Christian world
- Learn about abstinence only education, its effects, and the limitations of its use for addressing problematic sexual behaviors
- Identify the mental health concerns for those who come from Evangelical and Fundamentalist spaces, vis-à-vis public shame and out-casting in response to non-marital sexual activity
This course will be offered virtually via Zoom, will require pre-registration, and will be recorded for quality assurance and evaluation purposes only.
To receive Continuing Education credits an evaluation must be completed and submitted at the end of the course.
This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and is approved for 3 CE Credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification.
