With increased access to and availability of cannabis resulting from its relatively recent decriminalization and rescheduling, significantly more folks are (openly) consuming cannabis than in past generations. While many folks use this plant recreationally, (which has the potential to lead to misuse and habitual dependence) there is centuries-old research exploring the medicinal and therapeutic benefits of the plant, which many people are also already participating in. However, stigma and misinformation around cannabis remains, resulting in missed opportunities for symptom reduction, improved wellbeing, and increased connection with oneself and others.
This training dives into the history of cannabis stigma in the United States over the last century, exploring the legislation and political agenda the drove the narrative around cannabis starting in the early 20th century. From there, we will explore what science has to say about cannabis, discussing the endocannabinoid system and how this plant works with the body, exploring the therapeutic benefits for various common diagnoses and symptoms. Lastly, we will discuss several harm reduction tools and techniques. As with many things we put into our bodies these days, cannabis, too, comes with risks. Let’s talk about them and how to mitigate/minimize harm!
