This is the third of four trainings offered to develop comprehensive skills associated to providing gender affirming care as a mental health professional.
Techniques for engaging family members of a gender diverse minor for which unique challenges for therapists may exist and often demand a dual presentation of languages. Conceptualization of cis-gender default lensing in language juxtaposed to trans-inclusive language, validation of multiple viewpoints, and negotiation towards safe and effective development of relationships are the primary focuses of this training.
Course objectives:
- Learn how system theory of familial development can frame your work with a family that is struggling to understand/support a transgender teen
- Identify the value of flexible space holding for parents who present with transphobic viewpoints and methods of building rapport on common ground
- Identify the permanent & non-permanent effects and false fears regarding each step of transitioning
This course will be offered virtually via Zoom, will require pre-registration, and will be recorded for quality assurance and evaluation purposes only.
To receive Continuing Education credits an evaluation must be completed and submitted at the end of the course.
